A creative writer since childhood, Julia Tillinghast-Akalin studied poetry seriously at Sarah Lawrence College as an undergraduate and as a graduate student at Virginia Tech, where she received her MFA. She received training in writing and teaching Fiction, Creative Non-Fiction, and Poetry, and taught Introduction to Creative Writing at Virginia Tech. She is scheduled to teach a poetry at Marylhurst University's show:tell, summer workshop for teen writers and artists.
