Türkçe, or modern Turkish, has its roots in Central Asia, in 400 AD, and has been shaped by centuries of cosmopolitan culture, cross-continental empire, war, religious devotion, secularism, and modernization, making for a language as fascinating and beautiful as it is challenging. Julia Tillinghast-Akalin lived in Istanbul on-and-off for about five years and completed formal and informal training in the Turkish language. She translates Turkish poetry and has a passion for the language. She offers lessons in basic and beginning Turkish for travelers and others wishing to begin their exploration of this musical tongue.
